Monarchs Beat Woodrow Wilson

The rain and threat of a hurricane did nothing to dampen the Monarchs spirit as Menchville won its first game in 2 years defeating Woodrow Wilson 25-6 tonight at John B. Todd stadium. The Monarchs Brandon Hodges recovered the opening kickoff and Menchville quickly converted the turnover into 6 points on a 2 yard touchdown run by halfback Franklin Isaac. The key play on the drive came when QB Rakeem Kersey completed a 21 yard pass to receiver James Foxworth on 4th down. Wilson, who like Menchville finished 0-10 last year, displayed how much their offense has improved by driving 59 yards to put the ball on the Menchville 6 yard line. Four tries from the goal line ended when a pass from QB Marcus Jones went incomplete in the end zone. Early in the second quarter, a bad snap to Monarch punter Nick Lenartz gave Wilson the ball at the 3 yard line. Jones ran the quarterback sneak for a touchdown to even the score at 6. With 1:50 left in the second quarter tackle James Prince recovered a Wilson fumble that gave Menchville the ball at the 21 yard line. Odis Wesby picked up 19 yards and QB Rakeem Kersey sneaked in for the go-ahead touchdown. Shawne Alston returned the second half kickoff 57 yards to give Menchville great field position. Franklin Isaacs needed only 3 carries to cover the 23 yards and score his second touchdown of the game. Wilson again made a nice drive in the 4th quarter that covered 57 yards, but ended when CB James Foxworth intercepted a pass at the 8 yard line with 8:36 remaining. Shawne Alston sealed the game, picking up 58 yards on 6 carries including a 7 yard touchdown with 1:36 left in the game. Menchville coach John Byron was proud of his team and credited the win to hard work and preparation. \“Tonight the guys believed in themselves" he said. \“The rain limited what we could do offensively but we were able to overcome it in the end\”. Sophomore Shawne Alston lead the Monarchs with 86 rushing yards on 10 carries and made the big kickoff return at the start of the second half. \“The offensive line was blocking good and I came out in the second half and ran the ball hard\” said Alston. With the streak off their backs, the Monarchs can now focus on winning more games and getting better each week.
