If Friday's scrimmage against West Point was any indication, the Monarchs are ready for their season opener against Wilson on Thursday. The defense held West Point scoreless and the offense scored on every series including several spectacular running and passing plays.
After holding West Point scoreless on their first 10 play possession, the Monarchs took control and scored on their second play from scrimmage. Donnell Whitehead ran thru a huge hole opened by the offensive line and raced 70 yards for the Monarchs first touchdown. On their next series, a Rakeem Kersey 60 yard pass completion was called back because of a holding penalty. Facing a 2nd and 14, FB Eli Jackson bulled his way for a 32 yard run that put the ball at the West Point 42 yard line. Kersey then hooked up with Anthony Garlick for a 10 yard reception, and Shawne Alston finished the drive with 2 carries for 32 yards including a 14 yard touchdown run in which he carried several defenders in the end zone with him.
The next possession for West Point was a disaster as the Monarchs forced 2 fumbles and recorded 1 sack. The defense swarmed to the ball as Mario Thompson had 4 tackles while Eli Jackson and Shawne Alston assisted on 3 more.
The offensive line, again paved the way for the backs as they picked up 80 rushing yards on the drive overcoming a 10 yard holding penalty. Eli Jackson picked up 22 yards and Odis Wesby gained 56, including a 40 yard run on 3rd down and a 7 yard touchdown run. The Monarchs did not waste the last 3 plays of the possession as Whitehead scampered thru the West Point defense for a 68 yard touchdown run. Austin Hodges kicked the extra point to make the score 25-0.
West Point received the ball first during the 12 minute quarter but had to punt after not gaining any yardage. After an incomplete pass, James Foxworth caught a perfect spiral from Rakeem Kersey for a 59 yard touchdown. Hodges extra point made it 32-0.
West Point was able to move the ball on their next series. They got as far as the Menchville 33 yard line before the defense put the clamps on. Ronald Ellsworth made 6 tackles, some of which were devastating. Eli Jackson came up with the stop on 4th down to give the ball back to the offense. With less than 6 minutes remaining Alston picked up 49 yards on 4 carries and a touchdown to make the score 39-0.
